ENVI Lodges, a luxury eco-lodge management company based in the GCC and specializing in low-impact, nature-immersed accommodations, has revealed the design of its debut project—ENVI Al Nakheel Lodge. This luxury sustainable lodge is set in Saudi Arabia’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Al Ahsa Oasis and will offer a unique experience that blends modern comfort with a deep connection to nature.

Project Overview and Opening Timeline

Scheduled to open next year, ENVI Al Nakheel will be located on a traditional date-palm farm in Al Ahsa Oasis, one of Saudi Arabia’s richest cultural and natural landmarks. The lodge will feature 25 eco-friendly lodging pods, available in one- and two-bedroom configurations, designed to reflect the surrounding natural landscape. The property will also include an arrival pavilion, a farm-to-table dining restaurant, a café, a wellness sanctuary with a spa, a kids’ club, a swimming pool, and immersive experiences highlighting the natural and cultural significance of the area.

Sustainable Design and Architecture

The architectural and interior design of ENVI Al Nakheel is grounded in a commitment to sustainability. The design is the work of Thai-based Fractal Architects, known for their innovative approach called “plant-based architecture.” This concept draws inspiration from the date palm trees found on the farm, mimicking their trunk, fronds, and leaves in both form and structure. The lodge’s buildings are designed to rise and extend outward in a way that mirrors the natural growth of trees, creating a seamless blend between man-made structures and the environment.

In a nod to the region’s traditional mudbrick architecture, Fractal Architects will use a combination of mud and straw to give the buildings an earthy, textured finish that aligns with Al Ahsa’s architectural heritage. The focus on natural materials and a palette of earthy tones ensures that the lodge will integrate harmoniously into its environment.

Award-winning interior design firm Kristina Zanic Consultants is responsible for the interiors, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings and local culture. The design captures the essence of sitting “under the palms,” a local custom of gathering in the shade of palm trees. Natural elements like palm leaves, bark, straw, and locally sourced finishes will feature prominently in the interior spaces, ensuring a sense of place and authenticity throughout the property.

Commitment to Sustainability

As part of ENVI Lodges’ commitment to responsible tourism, all materials and construction practices for ENVI Al Nakheel are chosen with sustainability in mind. This includes using organic and locally sourced materials to minimize the environmental impact. Palm leaves, straw, and locally derived paint and textures will contribute to the lodge’s eco-friendly design, further aligning with the company’s ethos of low-impact, sustainable hospitality.

Co-Founder of ENVI Lodges, Nöelle Homsy, emphasized the company’s focus on sustainability: “ENVI Al Nakheel is not just a design triumph but also a reflection of our dedication to sustainability. Each of our eco-lodges is designed with the local environment in mind, using sustainable materials to reduce environmental damage while offering guests a luxurious and responsible travel experience.”

Partnership and Vision for Sustainable Tourism

ENVI Al Nakheel is a key project in Saudi Arabia’s push for sustainable tourism as outlined in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The project marks the first agreement between the Saudi Tourism Development Fund (TDF) and the private sector for a luxury eco-lodge, with Golden Frond Hotel Services Company, a subsidiary of the Afyaa Group, leading the development. The project has already received its construction permit, further demonstrating the commitment of all parties to advancing sustainable tourism.

As part of Saudi Arabia’s National Tourism Strategy, Al Ahsa is one of the top 10 destinations targeted for tourism development. The area holds significant historical importance, having been inhabited since the Neolithic era. This rich cultural background, combined with the natural beauty of the oasis, makes Al Ahsa a prime location for ENVI Lodges’ eco-conscious approach.

Future Expansion

ENVI Al Nakheel is set to be the first of three eco-lodge locations planned for the Al Ahsa region. Each lodge will offer a distinct environment and concept, while remaining within easy driving distance from one another, creating a circuit of eco-lodges for visitors to explore. This development aims to position Al Ahsa as a leader in sustainable tourism within Saudi Arabia.

In conclusion, the unveiling of ENVI Al Nakheel Lodge offers a glimpse into a new era of luxury eco-tourism in Saudi Arabia, where sustainability, cultural heritage, and natural beauty are at the forefront of the guest experience.
