Interviewer: Youssef, thank you for joining us today. Your journey from a logistics student to a renowned fashion designer is truly remarkable. Can you start by telling us a bit about what inspired you to shift from logistics to fashion design?
Youssef Akbar: Thank you for having me. My shift to fashion design was driven by a deep, personal passion rather than a planned career move. Growing up in Jeddah, I always had a strong interest in unique clothing. However, studying logistics and supply chain management was a pragmatic choice at the time. When I was in Australia, I realized that my true calling was in fashion. I couldn’t afford the clothes I wanted, so I decided to learn how to make them myself. That decision was pivotal and set me on this path.
Interviewer: It’s fascinating to hear how your personal experiences shaped your career. Your latest collection, showcased at the third annual Riyadh Fashion Week, is said to be a tribute to influential women in your life. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind this collection?
Youssef Akbar: Absolutely. This collection is very close to my heart. The Orchid motif is central to it, symbolizing fertility and sexuality. This choice was inspired by my mother and the broader concept of motherhood. I wanted to create something that honored the strong women who have impacted my life. Each piece is designed to reflect themes of empowerment and elegance, celebrating the essence of these incredible women.
Interviewer: Your work has been noted for its personal and autobiographical elements. Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you translate your experiences into fashion?
Youssef Akbar: My creative process starts with a deep emotional response to personal experiences or events. I immerse myself in research, drawing inspiration from art, history, films, and my surroundings. I sketch and experiment with fabric drapes, which eventually shape the final pieces. For me, fashion is not just about creating beautiful garments; it’s a way to express personal stories and emotions.
Interviewer: The Saudi fashion industry is evolving rapidly, especially with events like Riyadh Fashion Week. What are your thoughts on the current state of the industry and its future?
Youssef Akbar: The Saudi fashion industry is experiencing a renaissance. Events like Riyadh Fashion Week are playing a crucial role in this transformation. While there are challenges, such as the lack of a fully developed fashion infrastructure, there are also incredible opportunities. The efforts by the Ministry of Culture and the Fashion Commission are unprecedented and promising. With continued support and development, I believe the Saudi fashion scene will become a significant global player.
Interviewer: Speaking of the future, what are your plans for your brand moving forward? Are there any new directions or projects you’re excited about?
Youssef Akbar: I’m very excited about the future. I plan to continue pushing the boundaries of fashion and exploring new themes and narratives through my designs. I’m also passionate about nurturing emerging Saudi designers. Supporting the next generation of talent is crucial for building a dynamic fashion industry in Saudi Arabia. My goal is to create a brand that resonates with people and contributes to the cultural narrative of our country.
Interviewer: It’s clear that you have a strong vision for both your brand and the broader fashion landscape. What message would you like to share with aspiring designers and fashion enthusiasts?
Youssef Akbar: My message to aspiring designers is to stay true to your passion and embrace your unique voice. Don’t be afraid to defy norms and take risks. Fashion is a powerful medium for self-expression and storytelling. Keep pushing boundaries, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Embrace your creativity and let it guide you to extraordinary achievements.
