Saudi Arabia’s Green Vision: Pioneering Sustainability in Mega and Giga-Projects

With the Saudi Green Initiative at the forefront of environmental protection and clean energy adoption, it’s crucial for Saudi Arabia to embed sustainability practices across all sectors, particularly in its mega and giga-projects.

Jeremy Gray, VP of Business Development at WhiteWater, a leading designer and manufacturer of aquatic entertainment, highlighted the company’s long-standing commitment to the industry. “WhiteWater has been instrumental in developing parks since the inception of the industry over 40 years ago. Our goal is to contribute to Vision 2030 by helping establish over 600 entertainment attractions across the Kingdom. Our enduring partnerships with top entertainment brands globally reflect our dedication to the success of our clients and their guests.”

WhiteWater, renowned for its expertise in themed entertainment and internal processes, is committed to enhancing the environmental sustainability of Vision 2030 projects. With numerous megaprojects underway, Saudi Arabia has a unique opportunity to set global standards in sustainable practices, aligning with its Vision 2030 goals.

Sustainable Water Parks: A Green Future

When embarking on new projects, sustainability is paramount. In the context of entertainment parks, achieving sustainability requires world-class design and a harmonious relationship with the environment.

According to Jeremy Gray, “Well-designed water slides can significantly reduce water loss and power consumption, leading to more eco-friendly operations and cost savings. Most of the water used in these parks can be captured and recycled.”

He emphasizes, “By prioritizing sustainability from the design phase through to construction, including careful material selection, we can better protect the environment and create the world’s most environmentally responsible water parks.”

Making Smart Equipment Choices

Selecting the right equipment is crucial for sustainability. WhiteWater’s precise equipment selection reduces daily water consumption in parks to just two to three percent of current levels. Contrary to common misconceptions, water parks are not excessive water consumers compared to other recreational facilities; for instance, a golf course uses twice as much water daily.

WhiteWater’s engineers employ 3D modeling and proprietary simulations to accurately gauge water usage, minimizing the risk of over-specifying pumps and reducing water waste. “Proper pump sizing ensures the landing pool is appropriately sized, using less water, chemicals, and concrete,” Gray explains.

Simulations also help predict splash-outs, enabling the design of optimal risers that recapture water into the slide, enhancing the ride experience while conserving resources.

A 2016 test revealed that the new water slide system achieved a 55% reduction in power consumption compared to previous models.

Material Selection and Longevity

High-quality resin transfer molding (RTM) fiberglass, known for its low evaporation rates, is essential in warm climates. Choosing the right materials not only extends the lifespan of attractions but also reduces the frequency of replacements and the production of additional fiberglass.

Una deBoer, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer at WhiteWater, underscores the importance of genuine sustainability efforts. “Companies must be cautious of greenwashing, where sustainability is merely a marketing façade. In our fragile ecological state, it’s crucial for organizations to genuinely reduce their carbon footprint.”

She adds, “By implementing tangible sustainability measures, the leisure and themed entertainment industry can demonstrate our commitment to environmental concerns and show that creating enjoyable experiences doesn’t come at the expense of the planet.”

Looking Ahead: Sustainability as a Core Value

Sustainability should not be viewed as an additional cost but as a long-term investment. Green practices are often more economical over time and increasingly desirable to consumers. As Saudi Arabia embarks on its ambitious giga-projects, integrating sustainable practices into their design, development, and operation is vital. This approach will not only preserve the nation’s natural resources but also ensure a prosperous future for its people. By leading in sustainability, Saudi Arabia can inspire other nations to follow suit and set new benchmarks in sustainable development.
