Kami Viswanatha: Thank you for having me. My journey into the logistics and international business world began with a strong foundation in law and business. My education at the National Law School of India and Harvard Business School provided me with a rigorous academic background, which I’ve found invaluable throughout my career. What drew me to logistics was the dynamic nature of the industry and the opportunity it presents to solve complex problems on a global scale. The challenge of integrating strategic thinking with operational execution has always been compelling to me.

Interviewer: Your role as President of FedEx for the MEISA region is both impressive and expansive. Can you describe some of the key responsibilities you manage and how you approach leading such a diverse and geographically spread operation?

Kami Viswanatha: Leading FedEx in the MEISA region involves overseeing operations across a vast and diverse area, which includes more than 65 countries. My responsibilities encompass everything from strategic planning and commercial growth to operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. The key to managing such a diverse operation is understanding the unique needs of each market while ensuring that we maintain a cohesive strategy that aligns with FedEx’s global goals. I focus on leveraging local insights to drive innovation and efficiency, while also fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence across the region.

Interviewer: Your academic achievements are remarkable, with an MBA from Harvard Business School and a gold medal from the National Law School of India. How have these experiences shaped your approach to leadership and decision-making in your current role?

Kami Viswanatha: My academic background has been crucial in shaping my approach to leadership. The analytical skills and strategic thinking developed during my MBA program at Harvard have equipped me to tackle complex business challenges and make informed decisions. Similarly, the rigorous legal training I received at the National Law School of India has honed my ability to navigate regulatory environments and understand the legal implications of business decisions. These experiences have collectively contributed to a well-rounded approach to leadership, combining strategic vision with operational acumen.

Interviewer: FedEx has seen significant growth and expansion under your leadership. What strategies or initiatives have you found most effective in driving commercial growth and expanding the company’s presence in the MEISA region?

Kami Viswanatha: Driving growth in the MEISA region involves a multifaceted approach. One key strategy has been focusing on enhancing our service offerings and leveraging technology to improve operational efficiency. We’ve invested in advanced logistics solutions and digital tools to streamline processes and enhance the customer experience. Additionally, forging strong partnerships and understanding local market dynamics have been critical in expanding our reach and adapting our services to meet regional needs. By aligning our global strategy with local insights, we’ve been able to drive significant growth and strengthen our presence in the region.

Kami Viswanatha: Our priorities moving forward include continuing to drive innovation and sustainability in our operations. Additionally, expanding our capabilities in emerging markets and enhancing our service offerings to better meet the needs of our customers are key goals. I’m particularly excited about the opportunities for growth in the e-commerce sector, which presents new challenges and opportunities for us to explore and innovate.
