DETROIT, Sept. 28, 2024 — DTE Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, has expanded its innovative Energy Efficiency Academy to West Michigan, addressing the growing demand for skilled trades in the clean energy sector. This program, developed in partnership with Walker-Miller Energy Services, aims to foster economic growth by equipping local talent with the necessary skills to advance their careers in the energy industry.
The latest cohort of the Energy Efficiency Academy in Muskegon saw 10 students graduate from the advanced training program, designed to accelerate career progression for those already working in the energy efficiency sector. The program focuses on tackling Michigan’s declining housing stock, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing energy costs for low-income households. Graduates gain certifications and technical knowledge, qualifying them for roles in high-demand energy sectors.
One of the graduates, Manish Joshi, shared his experience: “The Energy Efficiency Academy expanded my knowledge of healthy homes and building performance. Learning how to analyze homes for energy efficiency and occupant health, through a blend of classroom and fieldwork, made the training incredibly effective.”
Graduates can now advance into key roles such as crew leaders, energy assessors, and project coordinators. They are also eligible for advanced certifications like Building Science Principles and Building Analyst, allowing them to contribute to Michigan’s state weatherization assistance programs, which aim to improve housing conditions and reduce energy bills.
Angela Wojtowicz, Vice President of Business Planning and Development at DTE Energy, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “We are committed to building a talent pipeline that enriches the communities we serve. Retaining skilled talent in energy efficiency is critical to meeting Michigan’s housing demands, and programs like this help drive workforce development.”
Following the program’s success in Muskegon, the Energy Efficiency Academy will launch a second training program in Detroit next month. Since 2023, DTE has invested over $2 million in workforce development programs to support the clean energy sector, narrowing the gap in skilled-trade workers.
