Peoria, US – Komatsu has announced the enhancement of its Peoria operations through the construction of a new office building designed to foster collaboration among engineering, sales, manufacturing, management, and other functions.
The company recently held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new facility, which emphasizes operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. In line with its commitment to sustainable practices, the office will feature innovative elements such as solar panels, stormwater reclamation systems, and energy-efficient LED lighting.
This project represents a significant investment in Peoria, replacing an existing office building constructed in the 1970s and ensuring Komatsu’s long-term presence in the region.
“Komatsu’s commitment to Peoria is a partnership we greatly value,” stated Peoria Mayor Rita Ali. “The new facility marks a progressive step in sustainable manufacturing and will strengthen Peoria’s economy and community. We’re thrilled to witness Komatsu’s ongoing investment in our city, which creates opportunities for the next generation of workers.”
The new office building is slated for completion by the end of 2025, further solidifying Komatsu’s leadership in mining technology and its role in the economic future of Peoria. Key partners for the project include EUA and P.J. Hoerr.
In addition to the office enhancements, Komatsu has unveiled a 980E-5SE mining truck as a community showcase at the entrance of its Peoria operations. This truck, built in Peoria as an early prototype in January 2020, was commercialized in 2023 and recently won the prestigious title of “Coolest Thing Made in Illinois” in the 2024 “Makers Madness” contest, hosted by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association. The competition garnered nearly 315,000 public votes over eight weeks. The 980E-5SE boasts an impressive hauling capacity of 400 tons (363 t) and features advanced electric drive technology.
Dan Funcannon, Senior Vice President of Surface Haulage for Komatsu, expressed pride in the display truck, stating: “This truck represents not only an extraordinary engineering achievement but also showcases the dedication and innovation of our Peoria team, highlighting our manufacturing capabilities. We’re eager for employees, visitors, and Peoria residents to witness the scale and ingenuity behind our products.”
Several key partners contributed to the installation of the 980E-5SE truck, including Boilermakers Local 158 for assembly, P.J. Hoerr as the general contractor, and Mohr & Kerr for site and foundation design.
