Saudi Arabia has unveiled an ambitious development plan allocating SAR 2.64 billion to transform Darin and Tarout Island, a historically rich 32-square-kilometer site home to approximately 120,000 residents, into a premier tourism destination. The initiative aims to enhance the island’s appeal through its unique natural and cultural assets, including a vast mangrove forest and eco-friendly accommodations.

Objectives of the Development Plan

The primary objective of this initiative is to elevate the quality of life for residents and boost the local GDP by leveraging the island’s inherent advantages in heritage, nature, and tourism, thereby supporting the broader goal of economic diversification.

The development strategy, orchestrated by the Darin and Tarout Development Corporation, is structured around three key pillars:

  1. Cultural and Historical Preservation: Efforts will focus on safeguarding the island’s rich heritage and historical sites.
  2. Environmental Revitalization: Initiatives will aim to restore and promote the island’s natural beauty and ecological significance.
  3. Enhancement of Quality of Life: The plan includes improving infrastructure and developing a vibrant tourism economy.

Heritage Tourism Promotion

The development plan highlights the importance of the Darin Castle and the island’s airport as key heritage tourism attractions. These sites will serve as focal points for cultural and heritage festivals, drawing visitors and fostering community engagement. Additionally, the creation of extensive pedestrian pathways will facilitate exploration of the island’s historic locations, enriching the visitor experience.

Environmental Initiatives

On the environmental front, plans include establishing the largest mangrove forest along the Arabian Gulf’s shores, alongside the construction of eco-hotels and motels nestled in natural surroundings. These initiatives are designed to enhance the island’s ecological footprint while improving the overall quality of life through upgrades to infrastructure, including new roads, public parks, and modern sports facilities.

Economic and Social Impact

The anticipated outcomes of this comprehensive development plan are significant, projected to contribute up to SAR 297 million to the region’s GDP annually. The initiative aims to attract approximately 1.36 million tourists by 2030, creating thousands of job opportunities for local residents. Moreover, the plan allocates nearly 48% of the island’s area for parks, waterfronts, roads, and various facilities, fostering a balanced and sustainable environment.

Alignment with Vision 2030

The approval for the Darin and Tarout Island development concept and the establishment of the Darin and Tarout Development Corporation align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives, which seek to cultivate a flourishing economy through diversified growth and sustainable development.
