The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has officially invited bids for the construction of the Jafurah 380/230kV Substation, a pivotal infrastructure project located in the eastern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This substation is part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the electrical grid and support the country’s energy demands.

Project Scope

The project encompasses the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor 380/230kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS). Key components of the scope of work include:

  • Major Equipment Installation:
    • 380kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
    • 230kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
    • 752 MVA Power Transformers
    • Reactors
  • Advanced Systems:
    • Protection and Control System
    • Substation Automation System
    • Telecommunication System
    • Security System
    • Cyber Security Measures
  • Civil and Electro-Mechanical Works:
    • Comprehensive civil construction
    • Electro-mechanical installations

Bid Submission Details

The deadline for bid submissions is set for 10 January 2022. Bidders are expected to undertake the project on a lump sum turnkey basis, which includes:

  • Design and engineering
  • Materials procurement
  • Quality management
  • Factory inspection and testing
  • Transport and delivery to the site
  • Installation and construction
  • Site inspection, testing, and commissioning

All associated work and services are to be completed until the final handover of the substation in a fully operational state.

Project Timeline

The project is expected to be completed within 29 months from the commencement date.

Additional Context

The Jafurah gas field, which the substation will support, is the largest natural gas field in Saudi Arabia, spanning approximately 170 km by 100 km. It is estimated to hold around 200 trillion cubic feet of rich natural gas, highlighting the importance of this infrastructure in facilitating energy distribution and management in the region
